Interesting what you are writing here. Coen and I have been traveling for 5 years now in an old Toyota LandCruiser BJ 45. We gave up everything we had in Holland and decided to discover the world. The world is so beautiful and there is so much to discover! Living in a car is for us as good as our home in Holland used to be.
Anyway, we often hear the similar remark about how fortunate we are. Between us we have our discussion about it. Yes, I believe that we are fortunate in the sense that we come from a rich country, have a broad education [which f.e. enables us to work in different areas], and I believe it may be a bit easier for us to do what we are doing [leaving our 'certainties' behind and set out on another path] than f.e. people in poorer countries. The other side of the story is that there are so many people with similar backgrounds as we, but who apparently don't make this [or any other] choice, and decide to complain throughout their life about everything they don't have. We feel that everybody has a choice in life, to stay or to go, whatever is best for you, and to have a rich and fortunate life.
happy traveling,
Karin-Marijke and Coen

Agree completely. When people tell you how fortunate you are, they are being greedy in wanting to have the cake and eat it too.

Excellent post! Fascinating!
I am glad you make the time to update this blog given all what you are up to. Fortune is an oft-misused term indeed. What separates a succesful skydiver from someone like who wont probably try it is not largely fortune, but having the gumption to decide to take off.
