Minas Gerais

Colonial Brazil – Minas Gerais. (Map this!)

Minas Gerais is home to some of the most beautiful colonial cities in Brazil. Ouro Preto, the most visited of the colonial towns, boasts beautiful old churches set against a lush green countryside sparkling from recent rain. Steep cobbled streets and red tiles roofs on white colonial houses stretch up and down the surrounding hills, in pleasing harmony with nature. The small town of Mariana near Ouro Preto had organ recital in its cathedral, one of two German organs of its kind in existence.

Minas is also famous for its mines, you can buy all sorts of jewelery here. But most important, the food of Minas Gerais is wonderful; feijoada, a bean stew with meat served with farofa (cassava flour) and couve (bitter greens), frango con cuiabo (chicken with okra), tutu de feijão (bean paste with meat) are some of the tasty local dishes.
